James Pendergast

James Pendergast is a Pet Food Formulator and pet industry consultant who partners with existing manufacturers, start-ups, and other industry professionals in developing complete and balanced meals, therapeutic diets, and other products to grow their brands.

James is one of the leaders in the raw pet food world, having worked for more than a decade for one of the largest fresh/raw pet food companies in the US in the role of Product Manager, Formulator & Veterinary Sales Director. In that time and working under the tutelage of world-renowned animal nutrition expert Steve Brown, James commands unparalleled and professional experience in fresh/raw, cooked, and freeze-dried pet food formulation, vitamin/mineral premix development, ingredient research, and nutrient analysis, and proven results with his species-appropriate formulas.

His approach pushes the boundaries when it comes to optimal, age-specific pet nutrition. James continues to collaborate with some of the most progressive veterinary nutritionists and holistic veterinarians in formulating some of the most groundbreaking minimally processed, pet food recipes available today.

Currently, an active consultant, for both domestic and international clients, James is driven to positively impact as many dogs as possible by helping pet food companies and industry professionals formulate fresh meat-based diets that meet US and European standards.  

James has advanced training and certification in Companion Animal Nutrition from the University of Illinois Animal Sciences College of Agricultural, Consumer & Environmental Sciences. He is HACCP certified through BioMedix, in collaboration with California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, and the International HACCP Alliance, and holds Preventative Controls Qualified Individual (PCQI) certification through Food Safety Preventative Controls Alliance (FSPCA)-Preventive Controls for Animal Food. James is a member of the American Academy of Veterinary Nutrition (AAVN).

James resides in Seattle, Washington with his dog Reeby, and together they both enjoy exploring the abundance of mountain trails, rivers, and lakes that this part of the country offers.
